At first the poet assumes the role of protector of the boy; gradually, however, the roles of protector and protected are reversed as the two form a curious and touching alliance.

A couple of my favorite passages:

'We have some power in us that knows its own ends. It is that that drives us on to what we must finally become. We have only to conceive of the possibility and somehow the spirit works in us to make it actual. This is the true meaning of transformation. This is the real metamorphosis... Our further selves are contained within us, as the leaves and blossoms are in the tree. We have only to find the spring and release it. Such changes are slow beyond imagination. They take generations. But it works, this process.'

'What else should our lives be but a continual series of beginnings, of painful settings out into the unknown, pushing off from the edges of consciousness in the mystery of what we have not yet become, except in dream... What else is death but the refusal any longer to grow and suffer change.'

OUR FIRST POP-UP PRACTICE WAS A HIT!

Many thanks to everyone who came to our first pop-up practice. We had a great turn out and there was a wonderful energy in the room.

We'd especially like to thank Kylie, for hosting us at her gorgeous Body Maintenance Studio, and Heather, for teaching a beautiful class. I guess you could say our theme for the practice was 'spontaneity', and Heather put together some fantastic quotes that touched on this. Great food for thought...

'The goal of wisdom is laughter and play-- not the kind that one sees in little children who do not yet have the faculty of reason, but the kind that is developed in those who have grown mature through both time and understanding. If someone has experienced the wisdom that can only be heard from oneself, learned from oneself, and created from oneself, he or she does not merely participate in the laughter-- the person becomes the laughter itself.' Philo (circa 20 BCE-50CE) Alexandrian Jewish philosopher

'Without the interference of the ego, actions become spontaneous, appearing as a smooth flow (like vinyasa). Truly enlightened beings have an economy and elegance of movement about them that is absent in the unenlightened, because they have removed the obstacle of the ego.' George Feurerstein

'When I am not preoccupied with going TO someplace, the going itself can become joyous.' Yun-men, Ch'an Master

And a few thoughts from Heather herself...

'For me, yoga is not about the obliteration of the self. It is the obliteration of a false perception of self-- one that inherently limits our vision of who and what we are. Call that process a loss of ego, call it whatever you like. But in the end, I think yoga simply makes us recognise that we are 'more than'-- 'more than' our mind, 'more than' our physical body, 'more than' what others think of us, 'more than' our past, and so forth. And once we awaken to that reality, I think we find NOT that we are nothing, but jsut the opposite. We find that we are limitless, connected with everyone and everything, never wholly separate, and therefore, never alone. For me, this realisation is a source of vast comfort and empowerment.'

<img style="float:left; There are a range of yoga practices (and meditations) to choose from thru iTunes-- basic foundation building sessions right thru to real 'doozies'. Let's you practice wherever, whenever, however you need to. Gives you total flexibility-- which is, afterall, part of why we practice yoga in the first place!

If you like going to the studio for social reasons, and are worried that you'll miss the 'vibe', then try inviting some friends around to do a podcast practice together-- a couple of my buddies and I have gotten into the habit of doing this once a week, followed by dinner/ tea and a chat. It's the best.

Our favorite podcast practices are 90-minute power vinyasa style classes posted by Yogi Wade (Ohio USA). Check him out at:

Yogi Wade Podcast Practices

He is also listed in the iTunes podcast library. Downloads are FREE, but donations are welcome! (through the Tip Jar on Wade's homepage)

Yogurt was inspired by Wade- both as a teacher and as a cultural communicator, so we decided to make friends and find out more about him. This is what he had to say about yoga (and Yogurt!):

WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON MISCONCEPTION ABOUT YOGA?
The most common misconception about yoga is "I can't do that I'm not flexible!" I explain to folks that yoga is not about being flexible or strong or being able to meditate through hemmorhoid surgery. It's about being willing to challenge yourself to change and grow. You may get to know yourself a little better and if you're lucky you may even earn to be more accepting of the person you've uncovered.

IS YOGA JUST FOR HIPPIES?
Yoga is for hippies, yuppies, Jews, Gentiles, Easterners, Westerners, athletes, couch-potatoes and even Republicans. Yoga is for anyone who is willing to look inside of themselves and learn how their body and mind are connected.

HOW COULD GENERATION Y (18-28 YR OLDS) BENEFIT FROM YOGA?
18 to 28 year olds (but also people of any age) can benefit from a yoga practice because of all the negativity they are exposed to in daily life. TV, news, movies, magazines newspaper and advertising in particular seem to emphasize that none of us are "good enough". Yoga emphasizes acceptance of who we are, our abilities and disabilities.

WHEN DID YOU START PRACTICING/ WHY?
I started practicing in my twenties (I'm going to be fifty in Dec.) I was a runner and I could feel my self tightening up from the repetitiveness of this exercise. I tried stretching but I felt something was missing. I bought a copy of a yoga book by Richard Hittleman and I practiced 12 postures that were recommended for runners for about 10 years. When I turned forty, years of running, triathlons, skiing, climbing and kayaking were beginning to take a toll on my body (as well as my mind). I found a VHS tape in a bookstore by Bryan Kest (Power Yoga I) and my life was changed. I found an athletic practice that could build you up rather that tear you down, a practice that asked you to focus and build your mind through concentration and a practice that seemed to integrate the body, breath, mind and spirit. I was always very competitive in my athletics but this practice allowed me to challenge myself and be accepting at the same time!

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE POSE/WHY?
My favorite pose in yoga is Child's pose primarily because it just feels so damn good but also because it reminds me that all the postures should be approached with the playfulness of a child.

DOES YOGA COMPLEMENT OTHER SPORTS/ ACTIVITIES?
Yoga has been a great complement to my athletic activities. I did expect that it would improve my climbing and kayaking but what surprised me was the slow change that began to take place in my attitude towards the trials and tribulations of everday life. I guess what I'm trying to say is I just seemed to get pissed-off less often!

WHAT DOES THE 'ART OF LIVING' MEAN TO YOU?
The art of living and the art of finding yourself are really the
same. It seems to boil down to the realization that we are really all one even though we are all different!

WHAT'S IN YOUR IPOD AT THE MOMENT?
My musical tastes are diverse. You might hear rap, new-age, folk or blues in any of the classes in Ohiopyle.

WHAT RESOURCES WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO SOMEONE WHO WANTED TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT YOGA?
I encourage people that come to practice to seek out as many different teachers as they can. There are a lot of great yogis and yoginis out there. With the popularity of Yoga in the West, along with yoga clothing lines such as Lululemon and Be Present taking off, it’s become apparent that people want to look good while holding Vrksasana (Tree pose). Sweatpants and a tee just won’t do anymore. Its popularity is especially growing among younger people. Some practitioners are concerned that the true meaning of the practice will be dumbed down for the secular crowd. Thanks to yogis like Morgwn Rimel, founder of Yogurt Activeculture Wear, they are hoping their product will not only draw people to yoga, but also show that it is safe to spice up this ancient practice. Yogurt Activeculture is using western language to introduce an eastern philosophy. They produce yoga clothes and items for the yogi who wishes to express themselves during their practice with shirts that say “Stay Tuned” or “Poser”.

Yoga is the Sanskrit root word for “union” or “join together.” It is the practice of joining together the mind, body, and spirit through a series of poses called Asanas. It is the practice of staying calm in the present moment while being in an awkward or uncomfortable position. It is a practice that can be used throughout our daily lives for dealing with any difficult situation. Yoga is open to everyone and not strictly devoted to one religion. Like the Punk scene, yoga can be misinterpreted by many and can even be misconstrued as something negative. Rimel adds “So often, Yoga gets boxed up into this super-chill, Zen, hippy package but anyone who practices knows it’s not always super-relaxing or feel-good stuff. It can be really confronting and tough sometimes … hardcore even!”

Yogurt Activeculture is starting a peaceful revolution to show that yoga is for everyone no matter what your background may be. Rimel believes that “Every design communicates an idea that we’d like more people to think about … we hope to develop an Activeculture that’s NOT just about yoga, but that broadly promotes truth and beauty, encourages playfulness, cultivates individual style and wellbeing, and most importantly, inspires us to make positive changes in our lives and in the lives of others.” It’s not just about poses but to encourage a healthier lifestyle. And to throw a little Karma Yoga into the mix, $1 from every item sold goes to charity.

You can check out their apparel and order online at yogurtactiveculture.com.

http://venuszine.com/stories/diy/1690

PRESS: CLEO April 2006

PRESS: BUST Magazine (New York USA) Apr/May 2006

HEY HO, LET'S OM!
From classes to clothes, yoga is going punk rock

When you hear the words 'punk rock yoga', you might picture Sid Vicious doing a shoulder stand. But the latest twist on this ancient fitness tradition has more to do with a DIY ethos than musical chaos.

In 2003, Seattleite Kimberlee Jensen Stedl 'rebelled against the trappings and dogma betraying yoga.' A working-class gal from Boston, Jensen Stedl created Punk Rock Yoga (www.punkrockyoga.com).

'Yoga in this country is white and elitist,' she says. to make it affordable and approachable for a wider audience, she holds her hour-and-a-half classes in an all ages club, charging only a suggested donation of five bucks.

'There aren't a bunch of people doing whiskey shots and putting their cigarettes out on eachother's jackets. Hell, it's got less dust thatn half the yoga studios I've been in.'

There are others taking punk rock to the mat as well. Australian yogis-cum-e-tailers Morgwn Rimel and Gaylee Butler recently launched Yogurt Activculture (www.yogurtactiveculture.com).

'Yoga gets boxed up into this super-chill, hippie packaging,' says Rimel. 'Anyone who practices knows it can be really confronting and tough--hardcore, even.' To reflect this, the two are producing a line of yogic 'proactive-wear' that includes everything from The Six-String Mat (featuring an electric guitar) to saucy rocker tees that read 'Poser' and 'Enlighten Me'.

'Punk rock is more than just music and style-- it's an attitude, a way of being. just like yoga,' explains Rimel.

Hardcore, indeed.

[Alle C. A real supermodel. In 1999, Christy Turlington launched her yoga range, Nuala, with Puma. Best-sellers include shirts writ large with the words Poser or Enlighten Me, and their electric guitar-printed yoga mat.

‘Yoga’s not always relaxing,’ Rimel says. ‘It can be quite confronting and intense and we wanted to express that mental and emotional side.’

This feature article appeared in:

The Sydney Morning Herald
LIFE Section April 8-9, 2006
Trends by Jacqueline Lunn

PRESS: Slimming & Health April 2006

POSE OFF

Love yoga but hate the ‘lentil and mung bean’ image? A November 2005 Yoga Journal magazine poll found that young women are the fastest-growing segment of yoga newcomers , with the number of 18-to-24-year-olds who practice yoga rising 46% in 2004 compared to 2003.

Morgwn Rimel was bored with the usual yoga clothing fare and started wearing punk rock concert T-shirts to yoga. Based on the interest she stirred, Rimel and fellow Australian yogi Gaylee Butler started Yogurt, a punk-rock inspired yoga line. Do yoga and punk mix? Does anyone really know what time it is?

The founder of Yogurt created a buzz wearing T-shirts emblazoned with slogans like “Bored” or “Poser” to yoga. Yogurt Activeculture was launched in January and lends a decidedly harder edge to a meditative practice.

Expect to see a splintering of yoga clothing as the North American market vaults past 20 million practitioners, bringing more competition for established players like lululemon and Prana.

http://www.ubercool.com/2006/03/18/yoga-clothing-plays-female-punk

PRESS: Who Weekly March 2006

<img style="display:block; This time last year everyone seemed to be heading off to Ashram in Karala for a couple of weeks of modest omming with the monks everyday at 5am, this year everyone seems to be off to Costa Rica to stay with an ex-New Yorker who presents her own mix of yoga and extreme sports. Anyway, if this is your thing, then maybe you'll need to update your yoga wardrobe. No more Indian oranges and pinks-- consider some Aussie attitude from Yogurt Activeculture's range of clothing.

Yogurt was inspired by the reaction to the founders wearing iconic black rock T-shirts to class-- T-shirts with slogans like 'Bored' or 'Poser' on them:

'It sparked an interesting debate about what yoga really meant to us. Sometimes we ARE bored. Sometimes we DO act like phonies... and embracing these experiences is part of the process of self-discovery and awareness that we commit to when we practice, and in our lives in general.'

And that planted the seed for founders Morgwn and Gee...

http://www.psfk.com

PRESS: MX Newspaper Australia Dec 2005

PRESS: National Post Newspaper Canada Dec 2005

God save the yogi, it's anarchy in the ashram: Fitness trend sees punk rockers doing the downward dog
National Post
Wednesday, December 21, 2005
Section: Arts & Life
Byline: Misty Harris
Source: CanWest News Service

The picture of inner peace is looking a lot like a Sex Pistols concert as hipsters have their way with yoga apparel.

The newest twist on the ancient practice has rebel yogis donning everything from military pants to skull-and-crossbones T-shirts as they chant their way to fashion Zen. Those behind the unlikely trend say they're simply "using western language to talk about an eastern philosophy" within the context of their own pop cultural experience.

"Yoga is thousands of years old and was punk before punk rock even existed," says Morgwn Rimel, 28.

"It may seem like they're at odds, but if you think about it, punk rock is more than just the music and fashion that immediately comes to mind -- it's a modern attitude, a way of life and being, just like yoga."

Rimel, along with fellow Australian yogi Gaylee Butler, recently started Yogurt Activeculture as a retail expression of this idea.

The online clothing company (www.yogurtactiveculture.com) is the epitome of yoga punk, with cheeky rocker tees that read "Poser" and "Enlighten me," yoga mats emblazoned with six-string electric guitars, and "proactive-wear" with such diverse inspirations as grunge icon Kurt Cobain and the Hindu text Bhagavad Gita.

"So often, [yoga] gets boxed up into this super-chill, Zen hippy packaging," says Rimel. "But anyone who practises regularly knows that it's not always uber-relaxing, feel-good stuff. It can be really confronting and tough sometimes ... hard-core, even!"

In the same way people use art and music to express who they are, "punk yoga" is designed to help someone better express their personality while exercising. Despite appearances, Rimel says it's about "being yourself," not about looking cool.

"Our idea starts with yoga but it doesn't end there," she observes. "Ultimately, it's about the art of living."

Yoga apparel, punk rock or otherwise, has gone from crunchy granola to the pages of Vogue. At Lotuswear in B.C., for instance, it takes the form of punk-inspired wrist gloves, sexy bra tops, fashionable shrugs, and low-rise yoga pants modelled after jeans.

"Whenever you modernize an ancient tradition, you have to be willing to take some of the good with some of the bad," says Lisa Palleson, co-founder of Lotuswear.

"With the commercialization of yoga, not everything is going to be pretty. But at the same time, there are benefits where -- in a society suffering from heart disease and obesity -- if you can get someone into an outfit they feel good about, then they might actually go to a yoga class."

Chip Wilson, founder of lululemon atheltica -- the leading Canadian retailer of yoga- inspired apparel -- says it's all part of the evolution of yoga as a fun and fashionable lifestyle.

"It doesn't matter how people do it as long as they do it," he says. "It's like the world ultimately takes the best things from all different places and decides a new genre. It's part of being global."

Judy Zaichkowsky, a professor of marketing at Simon Fraser University, describes the overarching business concept as "selling an experience."

From lululemon's corporate value system to Yogurt's socially conscious marriage of punk rock and enlightenment, today's yoga customers aren't just one with the universe -- they're also one with the brand.

"Maybe 20% of the people who buy [yoga apparel] actually do yoga," says Zaichkowsky. "More than anything, what they're buying is inspiration."

CanWest Global is Canada's largest media company and newspaper publisher, with ownership of 11 major daily newspapers and a combined average circulation of 1.4 million daily.

YOGURT UNPLUGGED

<img style="display:block; ‘Yep, wanna lift?’

What started as a nickname for our yoga practice—Yogurt— has now become a symbol of our vision. For us, yoga is a practice that is colourful, varied and deep. And while it’s helped us get in touch with our ‘inner’ selves, we feel that the typical yoga ‘look’ doesn’t do much to reflect that expression as far as our ‘outer’ selves are concerned. The pastel, conservative activewear out there is well, ummm...boring.

So, we decided to change it up—and there’s no better way to do that than to start a revolution (albeit a calm, quiet one). We started by wearing our old black rock t-shirts, with slogans like ‘I’m Bored’ and ‘Poser’ to practice which, at first, provoked plenty of giggles and winks in the studio, but later, sparked interesting debate about what yoga really meant to us. Sometimes we ARE bored. Sometimes we DO act like phonies… and embracing these experiences is part of the process of self-discovery and awareness that we commit to when we practice, and in our lives in general. And so the seed was planted…

What has since grown out of that initial thought bubble is Yogurt Activeculture – a clothing and accessories line designed not only for function and style, but for a higher purpose. Every design communicates an idea that we’d like more people to think about. $1 from every item sold goes to charity. In this way, we hope to develop an Activeculture that’s NOT just about yoga, but that broadly promotes truth and beauty, encourages playfulness, cultivates individual style and wellbeing, and most importantly, inspires us to make positive changes in our lives and in the lives of others+

This first range is just the beginning of our adventure— like yoga, it’s revolutionary, challenging, confronting, individual, independent and authentic. It’s PUNK ROCK!

So stay tuned as we grow and change, shift and morph. We hope to bring you lots more goodies in the New Year… And for you guys especially—we know there’s not much out there for you to practice in (except board shorts!), so let us know exactly what you’re looking for so we can hook you up!

This site is for you to post comments, notes, and ideas about who you are, what you’re about, and what well and truly ROCKS YOUR WORLD. Please feel free to let us know what you think. We want to hear from you.
